LAW of the week

I like the idea that we are sharing rule issues with each other so each week we'll have a Law of the Week.

Last weekend there was confusion on Rule 14, the Throw-in. Several refs are using an IFK at the touch line after a player raises his foot or crosses the line on a throw-in. The proper restart is a throw-in to the opponent. The other is Rule 7 Duration of the Match. There was confusion regarding concluding a match. The conclusion of a match shall be delayed until the completion of a penalty kick. If you call a penalty kick you don't then wave off the match prior to awarding it, even if time has "expired". I hope we continue to improve our skills by working with each other.

Online Referee Workshop

Checkout “You make the call” on US Soccer: http://www.ussoccer.com/poll/poll.jsp.html This is a really good set of short video clips where you make the call; I found it very helpful and fun.

AYSO offers an online referee workshop: http://www.aysohelp.org/referee/workshops/referee_workshops.htm that will help refresh your memory on the Laws of the game.

Referee point system

  1. Here is how the referee point system will work this season: Each team is required to provide two (2) referees for this upcoming season:

    • One (1) must be a new Referee the 2nd can be a returning Referee.
    • Each game referee is worth one (1) point.
  2. For U10 through U14 divisions:  teams now have until the end of regular season play in the Region to attain the required ten (10) referee points. This way, playoffs proceed unaffected by a team's ref point status, and teams have more time to complete the point requirement.

·         If the winning team in the division has not attained the ten (10) points, the next highest competitively ranked team that does have the points will represent the Region at the Area playoffs.

·         If no team in the division has attained the ten required points, the team with the highest number of ref points will advance to the Area playoffs. In case of a tie (i.e. each of two teams have five ref points), the higher competitively ranked team will go on to Area.

·         Each Commissioner will receive a bi-weekly accounting for their division.

  1. For U8: Each team is required to provide one (1) new Referees for this upcoming season:

·         There is no ref point requirement for U8 this season

Volunteer Registration

All AYSO Volunteer must be registered with AYSO and you must register every year. If you need an AYSO ID number and or take the Safe Haven Course go to the links below.

In case you were not aware, the volunteer registration aspect serves to protect the kids from sex offenders, but also from litigation as we have trained volunteers. Lastly it provides a permanent record of any training you have completed.

Please fill out your parent volunteer registration for the 2007 season. I strongly recommend you register online at the AYSO website: www.eayso.org and click on "First Time".

 Safe Haven

You are REQUIRED to have completed and passed Safe Haven Course in order to Referee for AYSO. The main reason is Region’s insurance will not cover you or the Regions if you are involved in an incident.

Here is the "Safe Haven Course online" website: http://www.aysotraining.org/ Click on "I have my AYSO ID number then Click on Safe Haven for Referees (Course R001)

Not a Referee yet?    Our kids NEED you!

We still need many more referees, and there are many opportunities to take the referee course over the coming weeks at our neighboring Regions. You will be welcome at any of their courses, and the instruction is comparable with our own.

At this time the Region doesn’t have any additional Basic Referee Courses planed. So if you are still planning on refereeing this season you will need to attend a course in another Region in Area P. AYSO courses are recognized in all regions so you may take the course at any Region. There will be a myriad of different dates and locations in all eight Regions of AYSO Area P, as well as in adjoining Areas, beginning now and continuing through the early part of the season.  (Click here to see AYSO Referee Course schedules: https://www.ayso76.net/schedules/clinics/index.cfm)

If there is a date and time that works for you, e-mail an rsvp to the Region that you would like to attend, and please let us know that you will be there, by e-mailing JT at jt@ayso1031.org or Brian at brianjul@yahoo.com .

Once you complete the course, the lead instructor for that ref clinic will inform us, and we will add you to our active referee list and supply you with the necessary equipment.
